The Santa Clara Power Squadron is a unit of United States Power Squadrons, serving Santa Clara County, California, and environs. Our membership is composed of power boaters and sailors. About two-thirds of our members own boats which are home-ported everywhere from Monterey Bay to the Sacramento Delta, but boat ownership is not required for membership. We provide basic boating education as a civic service to the general public, and offer advanced courses to our members. Another public service activity is our Vessel Safety Check, in which trained examiners will, at the request of the boat owner, check a boat for required equipment and award a Coast Guard-recognized Vessel Safety Check compliance decal to boats that pass the inspection. The South Bay Yacht Club located in historic Alviso is one of the oldest yacht clubs in Northern California. One of the oldest yacht clubs in the area, the South Bay Yacht Club (S.B.Y.C.) was founded in 1888 as the South Bay Yachting Association by a group of 35 influential businessmen with a love of sailing. The Club was incorporated as the South Bay Yacht Club in 1896 and the clubhouse was built in 1903. The club and its facilities are historic and located in a Historic District of Alviso. The clubhouse was moved up to it's current location from 1982 to 1985 due to levee realignment. The original members conducted races, regattas, and other social sailing events through the club.
