AMSA is responsible for maintaining and developing a nationally consistent regulatory framework (the National System) that includes standards setting (National Standard for the Administration of Marine Safety, National Standard for Commercial Vessels, National Standard for General Safety Requirements for Vessels) and National System Regulations and Marine Orders. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) is the national agency responsible for maritime safety, protection of the marine environment, and maritime and aviation search and rescue. In relation to maritime safety, AMSA accords very high priority to the safety of navigation in Australian waters.

Fremantle Sea Rescue is one of Australia's busiest Sea Rescue groups. We have attended capsized vessels, vessels aground, boat fires, a number of medical responses, missing divers, swimmers and kite-surfers, as well as many boats experiencing mechanical difficulties. We are a registered charity of volunteers which is part of the network of WA Fire and Emergency Services. Marine Rescue Shoalhaven is a volunteer organisation operating a 24-hour Weather Conditions Service and Search And Rescue Coordination Centre (S.A.R.C.C.). The base station (callsign: Marine Rescue Shoalhaven) is located in The Pilot Station at Crookhaven Heads from where staff have views over the Crookhaven Bar and Shoalhaven Bight to Gerroa and Black Head. Between sunrise and sunset, the Pilot Station staff log vessels on and off as they put to and return from the sea. They monitor Marine Distress frequencies 24 hours a day and co-ordinate Marine Search and Rescue operations. The Pilot Station is manned 24 hours a day 365 days a year.
