Maine cooperates in a nationwide, uniform waterway marking system. The Maine State Aids To Navigation System is the basic system of waterway markers (buoys) used on State waters as recommended by the U.S. Coast Guard for the purpose of minimizing hazards to navigation. The system is consistent with the International Association of Lighthouse Authorities (IALA) Maritime Buoyage System (Region B) and complies with existing U.S. Coast Guard regulations.
