- Appalachian Mountain Club - Boston Chapter
Appalachian Mountain Club - Boston Chapter
The approximately 90,000 AMC members from DC to Maine are broken into 12 local chapters. The smallest is the Mohawk-Hudson Chapter (~3,000 members) and the largest is Boston (~20,000 members). All the Chapters are 100% run by volunteers who organize about 10,000 chapter outings per year that cover a wide range of activities. Of the 20,000 members in the Boston Chapter, an active volunteer core of 150 to 200 people run our 20 activity and service committees, and 750 active trip leaders lead pver 1000 events per year. The Southeastern Massachusetts Chapter of the AMC (SEM), founded in 1976, draws its members from a geographical area south of Boston including Cape Cod and the islands. The chapter publishes a monthly e-newsletter, The Southeast Breeze, which lists many activities such as hiking, biking, canoeing, kayaking, cross-country skiing, trail work, and other special programs. Also, AMC SEM chapter members may freely participate in activities associated with other AMC Chapters.

Cape Cod National Seashore Home Page
Cape Cod is only some 18,000 years old in geologic time, but its history includes a vast collection of people, places and events, most from a time long faded into memory. From the beginning of its creation to the foundation of its National Seashore, Cape Cod is one of the forbearers of our national heritage.

- Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary
Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary
Off the coast of Massachusetts, it provides essential habitat for many species of marine mammals, including the endangered North Atlantic Right Whale; & it is the focus of a large tourism industry centered on whale watching. Stellwagen Bank is an underwater plateau at the mouth of Massachusetts Bay, formed by the same processes that formed outer Cape Cod. As the ice sheets of the last Great Ice Age retreated, they left behind sand, gravel and rock. At one point in time (perhaps 12,000 years ago), Stellwagen Bank was actually above sea level, but as sea level rose and the glaciers continued to melt, the bank gradually submerged beneath the sea.
