Cape Fear River Watch (CFRW) was founded in 1993 to protect and improve the water quality of the Lower Cape Fear River Basin through education, advocacy and action. The Cape Fear is North Carolina's largest river basin and nearly one third of the state's population lives with in our watershed.

We educate and advocate to protect the Catawba-Wateree River Basin's lakes, rivers and streams for everyone who depends on and enjoys them. The Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation ("CRF") was formed in 1997. It is an award winning 501(c)(3) non-profit operating in the 24 counties of the Catawba-Wateree River watershed in North and South Carolina.

The Lake Norman Marine Commission (LNMC) consists of 5 members appointed by the Counties bordering Lake Norman—Catawba, Iredell, Lincoln and Mecklenburg. As defined by the North Carolina 1969 State Statute, the LNMC is responsible for taking appropriate responsibility for Lake Norman and its shoreline area for all matters relating to or affecting public recreation and water safety. As part of these duties the LNMC maintains a Navigational Marker System, encourages and promotes Boater Education, works with Duke Power on lake development as part of their FERC license requirements, developed and manages a long range Aquatic Plant Management Plan for Hydrilla and works with county, town and state government agencies as well as other organizations and the public in addressing important lake issues. The Lake Wylie Marine Commission is a federally established body of concerned citizens appointed by the governments of the three counties that border Lake Wylie. Its role is to represent the citizens of those counties and other Lake Wylie stakeholders to establish public policy and regulations to protect and preserve Lake Wylie and its shoreline, to encourage its safe use and enjoyment, and to protect Lake Wylie as a high quality resource and asset for the region. The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is the lead stewardship agency for the protection of North Carolina's environmental resources. The organization, which has offices from the mountains to the coast, administers regulatory programs designed to protect air quality, water quality, and the public's health, and also works to advance an all-of-the-above energy strategy that fits North Carolina’s needs. DEQ also offers technical assistance to businesses, farmers, local governments, and the public and encourages responsible behavior with respect to the environment through education programs provided at DEQ facilities and through the state's school system. The Division of Water Resources, with central offices in Raleigh and seven regional offices located across the state, ensures safe drinking water in accordance with federal requirements, issues pollution control permits, monitors permit compliance, evaluates environmental water quality and quantity, and carries out enforcement actions for violations of environmental regulations.

RiverLink is a regional non-profit spearheading the economic and environmental revitalization of the French Broad River and its tributaries as a destination for everyone to work, live and play. RiverLink accomplishes its mission by providing permanent public access to the river through conservation and recreation easements, reclaiming contaminated lands for public use and enjoyment, greenway development, creating public no-fee, no-reservation overnight camping sites along the river, adaptive reuse of historic structures, educating 5,000 students K-12 annually as well as the public-at-large about the French Broad River watersheds' importance and empowering over 1,700 volunteers each year.
