In November 1957 the eight members of the 1st Fish Hoek Senior Rovers Crew formed a lifesaving squad on Fish Hoek Beach, their only equipment being an old rescue reel and line with a canvas and cork belt, housed in a small hut located on the beach in front of the present Bayside Bistro Restaurant Complex. This squad soon attracted a large number of would be lifesavers and they were fortunate to be instructed by a visiting Australian lifesaver Brian Lovell. Australia were world leaders in lifesaving techniques at the time. Today Fish Hoek Surf is one of the strongest clubs in the country and provides a significant community service to all as well as being the reigning Western Province and National Competition Champions in its 50th year of existence. The KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board has been successfully protecting the province’s bathing beaches from shark attack for more than 40 years. Its research into bather protection, with as little impact on the environment as possible, is respected world-wide and there is a continuing exchange of information with overseas countries, notably Australia as well as USA and other countries experiencing shark incidents. KwaZulu-Natal has the only coastline in South Africa that is protected by shark safety gear. The KZN Sharks Board maintains shark safety gear at 38 localities and is the only institute of its kind in the world, offering safe bathing to tourists while also conducting research into shark life history and offering a public education programme.

South Africa has 43 lighthouses, however we will only be covering the ones of historic and architectural value to begin with. One of the purposes of this site is to involve people who have interesting stories, information and pictures of South African Lighthouses.

Since its establishment in 1955, the South African Navy Hydrographic Office (SANHO) has played an essential role in supporting safe navigation at sea in the South African region. The SANHO is recognized as the Centre of Hydrographic excellence in Africa by the International Hydrographic Community through its proven professional conduct, products, innovation and supreme service. The SANHO is the national producer of paper charts, electronic navigational charts (ENCs) and publications, with a folio of 102 paper charts, 56 ENCs and 9 publications. The mission of the SANHO is to meet National, Defence and Commercial customers' needs for navigational charts and other hydrographic information, in support of safe navigation.
