The Aoraki Dragon Boat Association ('Aoraki Dragons') is the collective of adult, youth and school dragon boating teams in the South Island, founded in 2007, making sure we have the resources, equipment and infrastructure to train and race in dragon boats. We’re one of four regional sports organisations (RSOs) for dragon boating in New Zealand, operating under the guidance of the New Zealand Dragon Boat Association (NZDBA) which is a member of the International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF), the worldwide governing body for the sport. We currently have sixteen 20-padder boats and six 10-paddler boats in four training locations around Christchurch and north of the city, with other boats located in Greymouth, Blenheim and Nelson. Teams train with the boats through the paddling season from around October to April (sometimes through winter, too), in preparation for race events against each other, culminating each year in the South Island Championships in mid or late March and the National Championships in late March or early April. • Auckland Dragon Boat Association Auckland Dragon Boat Association
We are more than a Regional Sports Organisation (RSO), we are part club, part fraternity but mostly a community. We support all our teams so they can train, run events together, notably the Auckland Anniversary Day Regatta and the Auckland Regional Dragon Boat Championships. We built our reputation on good sportsmanship and having a passion for making dragon boat racing available to everyone. We have a great network of sweeps, paddlers, and coaches who help make this non-profit initiative fun and rewarding. Dragon boating started in Auckland in 1988 with over 1,000 participants annually. We formally incorporated in 2008 and a registered charity run by the paddlers for the paddlers, enabling us to key costs low and train all year round with regular racing. Our goal is to promote, facilitate and develop the sport of Dragon Boating within the Auckland region, by providing training facilities, equipment, safety crafts, rescue operators, mentoring and events.
