Lightning and Atmospheric Electricity at the GHRC
The Lightning Team exists as a group of researchers, mostly scientists and engineers. As part of their research activities, the members of this team have been investigating the causes and effects of lightning as well as analyzing a wide variety of atmospheric measurements related to thunderstorms. One of the primary objectives of this group is to determine the relationship between the electrical characteristics of storms and precipitation, convection, and severe weather. In order to achieve this objective, the Lightning Team has designed, constructed, and deployed numerous types of ground based, airborne, and space based sensors used to detect lightning and characterize the electrical behavior of thunderstorms. The data collected by the Lightning Team is routinely shared with scientists around the globe, resulting in numerous advancements in the field of Atmospheric Science.

You can protect yourself and your family if you know what to do when you see lightning or when you hear thunder as a warning. Lightning strikes the earth more than 8 million times per day. The risk of being struck is low but the consequences of lightning strike injuries are serious. During 2003–2012, lightning caused an average of 35 deaths per year in the United States. Lightning, Tornadoes, Storms, St. Louis and Extreme Weather by Dan Robinson
Thanks for visiting! I'm a year-round weather photographer covering St. Louis, the Midwest, the Great Plains and beyond. I've spent weeks on the road for the last 28 years, driving thousands of miles in all types of weather, and plan to do it for as long as I'm able. My goal is to capture nature's dramatic side, and in doing so, provide visitors to this site with educational information and exciting photography/video about severe storms and extreme weather. I specialize in capturing imagery and video of tornadoes, lightning, St. Louis, MO and the Gateway Arch, storms and all types of extreme weather. I also sell fine art prints of my work via my photo gallery.
